After spending years cultivating an academic life, I realized my real passion was not for examining life but for living it! Although my studies were not in vain... both my Bachelor of Science and my Master of Public Administration have given me a vocabulary to connect with other indoctrinated intellectuals who have lost their identity in a label. As a dedicated practitioner of the Taoist way, it is my honor to guide others on their path of self-cultivation and spiritual development. At my studio in Anchorage, Alaska, I offer weekly classes, weekend workshops and private sessions. I also lead annual “adventure retreats” to historic and novel locations around the world. Using Taoist Philosophy with a mixture of Chi Kung, Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung Healing, it is my quest to improve the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of anyone who is interested in the process of self-cultivation. Although Taoism follows principles rather than rituals, there are a few meaningful titles that are granted. In June 2004 I was honored with the title of Shima (meaning mother teacher) from my mentor, Master Pei Wo Lun. This title is the female counterpart to Shifu. Few people have the privilege of studying with a Shifu or Shima. It has been my good fortune to be mentored by a Master Shifu. Master Pei, who often saw in me what I could not see in myself, opened my eyes to emotional and spiritual strength that I am now privileged to share with those who seek my counsel. My continued studies with Master Pei include Taoist healing techniques, two-person Tai Chi Sword and martial applications. My studies with noted Chinese practitioners include martial techniques and Chi Kung healing with Master Wu Zhongxian, Master Jiang Jiang-ye, Master Yun Xiang Tseng, and Grandmaster Zhang Yuan Ming. I've also studies principles and techniques of Yang-style Bear Paw with Yang Zhen Duo and principles and techniques of Yang-style Tai Chi Sword with Yang Jun. -- Shima Susan Elkins
