About Shima Susan

about-shima-susanAs a dedicated practitioner of the Taoist way, it is my honor to guide others on their path of self-cultivation and spiritual development. At my studio in Anchorage, Alaska, I offer weekly classes, weekend workshops and private sessions. I use Daoist (Taoist) philosophy, Qigong (Chi Kung) Meditation, Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) and meditative healing techniques to improve the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of my students.

After spending years cultivating an academic life, I realized my real passion was not for examining life but for living it! Although my studies were not in vain... both my Bachelor of Science and my Master of Public Administration have given me a vocabulary to connect with other indoctrinated intellectuals who have lost their identity in a label.

I began my studies with Master Shifu Pei Wo Lun in 1994. In June 2004, he honored me with the title of Shima, or mother-teacher, the female counterpart to Shifu. Few people have the privilege of studying with a Shima or Shifu. It has been my good fortune to be mentored by a Master Shifu who often saw in me what I could not see in myself. He opened my eyes to emotional and spiritual strength that I am now privileged to share with those who seek my counsel.

In addition to studying Tai Chi Chuan, Tai Chi Sword, BaGua, martial applications, meditation, and Taoist philosophy with Master Pei, I've also had the privilege of studying with Master Jiang Jiang-ye, Master Yun Xiang Tseng, Grandmaster Zhang Yuan Ming, Yang Zhen Duo, Yang Jun, Ho Wei Chi, Helen Wu, and Ken Cohen. I am currently honored to be studying with Master Wu Zhongxian, a high-level Chinese Shaman who has committed himself to the life-long pursuit of ancient wisdom arts and internal cultivation.

Through my Study and Practice of Tai Chi with Shima Susan Elkins I have been on a journey not only of self-awareness but self-mastery. Her ability to teach and transmit her knowledge of Tai Chi has been of great benefit to me, life transforming to say the least! Her workshops are both enlightenment combined with wisdom, knowledge, and a sense of humor. Her Sunday morning Tai Chi classes are very family oriented, and lots of FUN!...so if you visit Anchorage or live here do yourself a favor embark on a personal journey with Shima Susan Elkins -- Joe S.
